If you are a long-term resident of the UK and wish to remain in the UK indefinitely you may be considering becoming a British citizen. Whilst giving you access to a British passport, it does not necessarily mean you having to renounce your current citizenship or giving up your current passport. Many countries, including the UK, allow dual citizenship. If you are currently a citizen of a country outside the European Union a British passport also gives you access to work and residence within the EU without the need for further permissions.
The routes to citizenship can vary depending on your current UK immigration status and how you achieved it. The rules can be complex as British nationality law has changed significantly over the last few decades. The usual routes we come across at Harbour are as a progression from work permit, Tier 1 or 2 status, or as a result of marriage to a British citizen.
